The tournament 2012

The tournament in 2012 will be played from 4th-20th May. The preliminary round matches will be played in Helsinki (Finland) and in Stockholm (Sweden).

The four best teams in each preliminary round group will advance to the quarter-finals. The team that is placed at the bottom of each group will be relegated to Division 1. The tournament will end here for the teams positioned fifth, sixth and seventh.
The quarter-finals will be played against teams in their own group, which means that no team will have to travel to the other country for quarter-final matches.

The cross-over system will be implemented for the semi-finals – these matches will be played in Helsinki (Finland). Medal matches will also be played in Helsinki.

In total, 64 matches will be played during the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships. The two teams meeting in the finals will have played ten matches to reach the final.
